I could not be more happy for Drew Lunt who last week signed with the Bronco’s Men’s Golf team starting in Spring 2016.  Drew has participated in my junior program for over two years.  His goal was to play college golf at an NCAA Division I school, and Boise State was his top choice.  Drew worked very hard this summer and fall to prove to Coach Dan Potter that he would be an asset on the Bronco team.

Drew is passionate about golf and passionate about learning.  He is a natural leader and mature beyond his years and will be a great addition to the Bronco team.  His potential is just beginning, and I can’t wait to watch him continue to improve.  Congratulations Drew!!  Good luck this spring @BroncoSportsMGF

Drew now participates in my Elite Player Development program which is designed for collegiate players and elite junior players.  This group training program focuses on all aspects of the game and includes on course training; long game analysis using TrackMan, KVest, and BodiTrak; and short game technique and competitive practice.  This group also trains with TPI Certified fitness instructor Casey Crowell and focuses on getting stronger and building endurance for collegiate level golf.

Congratulations to Paul Weyland Golf Student Colby Dean for leading Chico State to a win in the Otter Invitational in California.  Chico State won by three shots over Nova Southeastern.  Colby lead Chico State with a third place finish individually out of 100 competitors.

Colby, a sophomore at Chico State, posted rounds of 69, 69, and 73 for a 5 under par total.  Colby attributed his fine play to an improved short game and a stronger mental game.  Colby said he focused only on the things he could control and let everything else go.  A great lesson for anybody competing at a high level.

I am incredibly proud of Carson Barry for his commitment to improving every day.  Carson was one of my first students at the Paul Weyland Golf Junior Academy.  He is now in my Elite Player Development program and trains with local collegiate golfers.  Carson is currently ranked 448 out of over 8,000 boys nationwide on the Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings, and he is only a sophomore in high school.  I look forward to helping Carson pursue his goals, because the sky is his limit!

In September Carson played in the American Junior Golf Association Sunriver Open and finished 16^th with rounds of 69, 74, and 73 on the difficult Meadows Course in Sunriver, Oregon.  Despite not having his best ball striking this tournament, Carson said he managed his game very well, had a great short game, and had appositive attitude all week.

On October 3rd and 4th, Carson won the prestigious Whitetail Invitational at the Whitetail Golf Club in McCall, Idaho.  This event attracts the top junior golfers from around the Northwest.  Carson posted rounds of 73, 73 on a 7,300 yard long course in very windy, difficult conditions to win by 5 shots.  Carson said he struck the ball really well on the second day and despite some challenges on the greens, he remained patient and stayed in the process of executing his shots one at a time, the best he could.

Every tournament is a learning experience for Carson.  He records his stats into Shot by Shot, a computerized round analysis system to learn what he needs to work on before the next event.  I help Carson use this information, so we know which parts of his game to focus on.

Congratulation to Paul Weyland Golf Junior Golf students for their fine play last weekend in the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour’s Idaho OPEN at Redhawk Golf Course in Nampa, Idaho.  In the boys 14 to 19 age division, Andrew Cortez from American Falls, Idaho played very consistent with rounds of 72 and 71 on the 6,900 yard course layout for total of 143 and a second place finish, two shots outside of first place.  Andrew contributed his good play to managing his game and keeping patient.  Well done Andrew!

 

In the boys 12-13 division Paul Weyland Golf Strive for Excellence student Connor Mahoney tied for first place after two days of great golf play.  Connor fired rounds of 73 and 70 and tied for first place.  Connor lost on the first playoff hole to a birdie with a nice putt holed by his opponent. Connor has worked very hard this year on controlling his emotions and having only either a neutral or a positive reaction to golf shots.  He has also worked hard on his distance wedge game.

 

Paul Weyland Golf Rising Star student Zach Carter won his division (Boys U11).  Zach shot a first round 83 to take the lead.  His second round of 77 was able to keep him in the first place spot for his first win of the season.  Zach had some nice words to say after the round, “Coach Paul Weyland works with me to give me the skills I need to improve. He helps me have confidence and believe in myself.”  I was so proud of Zach for slowing down and not getting ahead of himself. 

 

 In the Girls under 14 division Paul Weyland Golf Rising Stars student Carly Carter shot rounds of 78 and 79 to win by six shots over Rising Star Academy student Christine Cho who fired rounds of 82 and 81.   Just at the start of the summer, Carly was not breaking 90.  These two rounds gave her a glimpse of the possibilities of how good she can be.  Christine had a great year with several wins and was the leading points winner for Idaho on the RMJGT.  These two girls are getting better every day!!!!

Congratulations to Paul Weyland Golf students for their fine play in the recent Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour Idaho State Championship event at Ridgecrest Golf Club in Nampa, Idaho on September 26-27. 

Drew Lunt placed first in the Boys 14-19 division.  Drew shot a first round score of level par 72, leaving him in the lead by 1 stroke going into round 2.  Drew posted a great second round of 66 and he won by almost 10 strokes.  Throughout the weekend, Drew signed for a two day total of 10 birdies and an eagle. This was his first win of the season and earned him a spot in the Tournament of Champions and North American Junior Amateur Championship. Drew attributed his great play to staying in the process one shot at a time and not getting ahead of himself. He said his goal was to be patient and have a great attitude.  He accomplished both!!!! Well done Drew.

 In the Boys 12-13 age group, Paul Weyland golf student Connor Mahoney posted a first round of two under par 70 with 5 birdies. This had him tied for first after round 1 with Jake Slocum, another fine player of the Paul Weyland Golf Junior Academy Strive for Excellence program.  A second round 73 by Connor Mahoney was enough to propel him to the outright lead and take the title over Jake Slocum who came close behind to take second place.  The rounds of 70 on the first day posted by both Connor and Jake were their best rounds of the year.  These two kids are getting very good fast, and this tournament helped them both realize how good they really are.

 The Girls 15-19 Division was led by Paul Weyland Golf student Payton Fehringer the entire weekend. A first round of 82 left her in front of the pack by a few strokes moving into round two. Payton’s second round of 80 earned her the title of the event with the prestigious honor of being invited to the North America Junior Amateur.  I am so proud of Payton.  Even when she does not have her best golf she loves the game and maintains a great attitude. She understands that junior golf is about the process of learning something at every tournament and getting better every day.  Well done Payton!!!

I’m really proud of the great playing by college freshmen Natalie Mullins at College of Idaho and Justin Higgins at Northwest Nazarene University.

Natalie was named the Red Lion-Cascade Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for helping her team win the Oregon Tech Fall Invitational, shooting a final round 72 winning by eight strokes.

Justin helped his team shatter their scoring record with the second best round of 68.  The men’s team shot 12-under 276 in a duel with College of Idaho.

Natalie and Justin both participated in my Strive for Excellence junior golf program and now participate in my Elite Player Development training program.  The Elite Player Development program is a year around golf program designed for training college players and highly ranked junior golfers.

Paul Weyland Golf student, Payton Fehringer, won the 2015 Idaho Girls Junior State Championship. Payton had a great mental game and stayed positive in the tough windy conditions.  Congratulations Payton!!

Congratulations to Justin Higgins for his solid performance at the Idaho Golf Association 2015 District 1 Junior Championships tournament at TimberStone Golf Course on July 26, 2015. Justin tied for first after posting 70, 71 and won in a playoff.

I could not be more proud of Justin for his solid play. Justin is a student in the Paul Weyland Golf Junior Academy Strive for Excellence program. Because Justin has fully embraced his training he is quickly becoming one of the best golfers in Idaho. Justin starts his collegiate play at Northwest Nazarene University this fall on the NNU Men’s Golf Team. He is going to continue training in the Paul Weyland Golf Post Grad program, an elite player development training program. Justin has only started to see his potential in golf, and I’m excited to help him continue to reach his goals. Check out these numbers on TrackMan!

After the first round at the “Idaho Challenge” Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour event on June 13-14 at RedHawk Golf Course in Nampa, Idaho, Paul Weyland Golf Junior Academy – Rising Stars students posted some strong rounds:

On day two Jake O’Neil missed first place by one stroke and posted a 74 for a two day total 146. Jake Slocum followed up on the second day with a 75 for third place, and Connor Mahoney with a 71 for forth place! Some impressive scores for this quickly advancing group of up and coming Idaho golfers.

Christine Cho, who is in my newest junior group Rising Stars 2, won her age division by 7 strokes.

All of you should be proud of not just how you played but how you conducted yourselves on the course.

RMJGT Event Results

Congratulations to Paul Weyland Golf students Carson Barry and Jake O’Neil for qualifying for the 2015 IMG Junior World Championships.  These are two fine young men that will be representing Idaho at this prestigious junior golf tournament in San Diego, California on July 16th and 17th. The World Junior was founded in 1968 and has grown to over 1,200 participants from 56 countries and 42 states.

Jake O’Neil qualified in the boys 13-14 year old division. Jake just recently joined my “Rising Stars” junior group training program. This program is designed to train both boys and girls that are serious about playing high school and college golf. Jake is a great young player, so be sure to follow him over the next couple of years.

Carson Barry shot a 2 under par 70 and qualified in the boys 15-17 year old division. Carson is in my “Strive for Excellence” junior group training program. This program is designed to train both boys and girls that are serious about playing college golf and beyond. Carson continues to play some impressive golf this year, and I think he has a great chance of winning the Junior World on July 17th. Stay tuned!
